Carmen Pagan, CPAWHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY WORK? I am Vice President of the Internal Audit Department at Broadway Bank in San Antonio, Texas.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR COMPANY? Headquartered in San Antonio, Broadway Bank was founded in 1941. It has evolved from a small neighborhood bank into one of the largest independently-owned banks in Texas. Today, Broadway Bank continues to operate as a family-owned and operated financial institution. Broadway Bank offers a full range of sophisticated financial services, including personal banking, private banking, military banking, business banking, and wealth management. With more than $2.9 billion in total assets, the highly-rated Bank operates 39 locations in San Antonio, Austin and the surrounding areas.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH YOUR COMPANY? I have worked for Broadway Bank for five years in the Internal Audit Department.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy traveling, sporting events, and the Arts. I also enjoy working out at the gym, reading, and watching a good movie.

HOW DOES HAVING A CPA LICENSE HELP YOU IN YOUR JOB? As an Internal Auditor, I am required to possess the knowledge and skills needed to perform the Bank’s financial, operational, and regulatory compliance audits. Having a CPA license has helped me become more proficient in my job. Positive feedback is generally received from Bank Regulatory Examiners who review my audit documents, which is encouraging and adds a valuable dimension to my banking experience.

HOW HAS TSCPA HELPED YOU IN YOUR CAREER? As an Internal Auditor, I have taken full advantage of TSCPA resources available to members, which helps me stay up to date on current events affecting not only internal controls, but also risk management and corporate governance. I have received free CPE through TSCPA Professional Issues Updates webinars and the Member Appreciation Day. Through participation in TSCPA’s Business & Industry Committee meetings, I have had opportunities to attend seminars and mixers where speakers are invited to make presentations that are of interest to Internal Auditors in banking, as well as auditors who work in other industries, such as healthcare, government and nonprofit organizations. In addition, TSCPA has provided a wide array of exclusive networking opportunities. Being a member of the Texas Society of CPAs has broadened my horizons personally and professionally.

On a professional level, since I obtained my CPA License, I have had wonderful opportunities. For example, I was fortunate to travel around the world on a two-week first-class business trip to Philippines and India. While in Agra, India, I was able to visit the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was an amazing opportunity!

On a personal level, I have met incredible friends who are very involved in the local chapter of CPAs. This network of professionals and friends in the same arena motivates me to volunteer and be more involved.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? The Pianist. It truly depicts the fact that in order to survive or be successful in one’s goals or objectives, a person needs help not only from friends or team members, but also from unexpected persons.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Hillary Clinton; she is a high achiever who has been very successful at any endeavor she has attempted. Most First Ladies are ready to relax after their husband’s presidency ends; however, Hillary became a Senator and Secretary of State who through all her initiatives has made a difference in so many people’s lives.
